ILOILO CITY celebrates Flores de Mayo
In line with the city government’s efforts to push Iloilo’s tourism development through
increasing awareness among our populace of our religious/ cultural heritage, the Iloilo City
Government with Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Iloilo, Iloilo City Tourism Council and
Iloilo City Tourism Development office in cooperation with the Department of Tourism Region
6 will celebrate this year’s Flores de Mayo with Santacruzan Ciudad de Iloilo on May 27.
Santacruzan is a religious-historical beauty pageant which conveys the story of the discovery of
the Holy Cross by Queen Helena, Constantine the great's mother. The Santacruzan’s celebration
is in honor of Reyna Elena and has become a Filipino tradition which is being celebrated every
month of May.
This year’s Santacruzan will feature thirty (30) beauty queen sagalas and Iloilo City Councilors
joining the procession from the Iloilo Provincial Capitol grounds to San Jose church passing by
the heritage buildings along Calle Real. The event will also showcase the creations of our
Ilonggo who will provide the gowns of the sagalas.
This project aims to instill in our residents and visitors the beauty of our religious traditions
anchored in our very strong faith in the Roman Catholic Church, Iloilo being the cradle of many
heritage buildings mostly, churches. This event is also envisioned to provide an additional
cultural tourism event product to the existing activities we have in the city.
Solemn procession will be on May 27, 2014, 4:00 PM from the Provincial Capitol grounds and
will culminate with a Holy Mass at San Jose Church. The coronation of the Blessed Virgin Mary
will take place after the Holy Mass.
